Clam Beds:
These clams have symbiotic bacteria
in their gills that feed them the same way the tubeworms symbionts feed
the worms. The clams like to live in warm water coming up through little
cracks in the basalt. Although we don't see nearly as many different animals
living among the clams as we do among the tubeworms, funny little crabs,
called squat lobsters,
are usually in the area, as are small vent
fish. An occasional visitor, but not a friend
to the clams, are octopuses.
