WORKING AREAS

IMAZON is located in the city of Belém, in the state of Pará, and concentrates its research activities on the eastern Amazon (states of Pará, Amapá and Maranhão). The eastern Amazon is the region where environmental impacts from human settlement have been more severe. The institution's research projects focus on the five principal activities which involve the use of the region's natural resources: cattle ranching, agriculture, mining, logging, and forestry extractivism. These activities are organized in two research programs: "Projeto Madeira"(Logging Project), which involves logging and forestry extractivism and "Projeto Conservação e Desenvolvimento" (Conservation and Development Project), which includes ranching, agriculture and mining.
