RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Studies are conducted in four stages: first, we collect
data to document, in a multidisciplinary and quantitative way,
how and where the different resource-use activities are carried
out, and what are the economic, environmental and social impacts
of these activities. Second, we study factors which impose limitations
to the adoption of sustainable practices. Some examples of these
factors are the availability of capital, technical knowledge,
infrastructure, market characteristics, social organization, and
sectorial policies. Third, we conduct demonstration projects to
display alternative, more sustainable approaches to resource use.
The last stage is to identify strategies to disseminate the results
obtained by the research and demonstrative projects. This process
involves the establishment of education programs and seminars,
the production of manuals, and so forth. These dissemination efforts
aim at generating concrete changes in the use of the resources
throughout the region.
